Interfaith Search Fiji Condemns Vandalism of Sacred Hindu Shrine in Tavua

Interfaith Search Fiji strongly condemns the recent act of vandalism at the Sri Shiva Subrahmanya Swami Temple (Tagitagi Temple) in Tavua, where a sacred shivling was forcibly removed, destroyed, and discarded. This act is deeply distressing and unacceptable. It is not only an attack on a place of worship, but an assault on the fundamental values of respect, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence that define Fiji as a nation.

Fiji has long been recognised for its rich cultural and religious diversity, where people of different faiths live side by side with mutual respect. Acts of desecration against any religious symbol threaten social harmony and undermine the spirit of unity that binds our communities together.

Interfaith Search Fiji stands in solidarity with the Hindu community of Tavua and across the country. We call upon all people, regardless of faith, to reject violence, hatred, and disrespect in all forms.

We fully support the ongoing police investigation and urge those responsible to be brought to justice through the rule of law. We also encourage community members to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.

At this time, we appeal to all religious leaders, community groups, and citizens to reaffirm our shared commitment to peace, understanding, and mutual respect. No religion teaches destruction or hatred. All faiths teach compassion, reverence, and responsibility toward one another.

Interfaith Search Fiji will continue to work with faith leaders, communities, and authorities to promote dialogue, healing, and unity during this difficult time.

Warm regards,

Zoran Ali – Chairman
